RED CROSS DISASTER TRAINING SCHEDULE - 2008

 

The following classes will be held at the

NOTE: Fulfilling Our Mission: Translating Your Compassion Into Community Action is a PREREQUISITE for ALL CLASSES

 

Classes, Dates & Times to choose from:

 

Fulfilling Our Mission: Translating Your Compassion Into Community Action: Instructor-led course, introduces you to the role of the Red Cross in the community’s actions in preparing for, responding to & recovering from emergencies & disasters. You’ll be able to understand the mission of the Red Cross, the principles & values that support the mission & the expected behaviors of Red Cross volunteers & employees in the conduct of that mission & then be given the next steps.

 

** Prerequisite for all classes. Liberal – Saturday April 19, 2008 - 9a.m. to Noon

Mass Care Overview – This course is designed to introduce the learners to the activities for the Mass Care group. It involves video segments, instructor lectures & classroom activities. It provides an overview of the activities performed by the Mass Care group in support of a disaster relief operation.

 

** Prerequisite for classes. Liberal – Saturday April 19, 2008 – 1p.m. to 4 p.m.

** Client Casework: Providing Emergency Assistance – You are trained how to conduct effective client interviews & provide appropriate assistance to help meet a client’s immediate disaster-caused or disaster-aggravated needs. The class consists of a series of short instructor & video presentations interleaved with class discussions, which focus on the skills, knowledge & attitudes required of a Red Cross caseworker.

 

Liberal – Saturday April 26, 2008 – 8a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

** Shelter Operations – Instructor-led course designed for the learners to acquire knowledge of Red Cross policies & procedures for setting up, running & closing a shelter during a disaster. This course prepares you to manage shelter operations effectively & sensitively as a team while meeting the needs of people displaced as a result of a disaster.

 

Liberal – Monday – April 28, 2008– 6 p.m. – 10 p.m.

** Shelter Simulation - Instructor-led simulation. The purpose of this training is to apply knowledge, skills & abilities required to operate a successful shelter. The Shelter Operations training is required before taking this class.

 

Liberal- Tuesday - April 29, 2008 – 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

** Fundamentals of Disaster Assessment – This class is a blended learning course consisting of two components: online & instructor-led. The purpose of this course is to introduce the critical role of Disaster Assessment, explore related preparedness tasks, and learn how to collect and communicate disaster assessment information and become familiar with how disaster assessment information supports management and service decisions. When you sign-up for this class, we’ll send you the information for the on-line class. Please bring your online verification form to the instructor-led class.

 

Liberal – Tuesday - May 6, 2007 – 6 p.m. – 10 p.m.

** ERVs: Ready, Set, Roll – This course is designed to provide learners with the opportunity to learn about & use an Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) & all related equipment. You’ll be prepared to operate an ERV & its equipment safely & effectively to meet feeding & other service needs of people affected by disaster.

 

REQUIRED: a Valid Driver’s license, Satisfactory DMV Report & Defensive Driving Course Certificate.

RED CROSS CLASSES & TRAINING SCHEDULE:

 

 
* Must be pre-registered and prepaid in order to attend any of the classes below *

 

Lifeguard, CPR/First Aid & Water Safety Instructor Training:

All classes have a required minimum of 6 participants and a maximum of 15 participants. Early registration is recommended. 

 

Registration for each class will be announced and ends one week before the first day of class. If there are not at least 6 participants, classes will be cancelled.

Classes are held on the SECOND Saturday of every month from 8:30am - Noon at the Garden City Area Chapter Red Cross.

Classes are held on the SECOND Saturday of every month from 1:00 - 4:00 pm at the Garden City Area Chapter Red Cross.

Requirements:

  • Must be at last 15 years old
  • Must be able to swim 300 yards continuously
  • Must be able to retrieve 10 pound object from the bottom of the pool and swim with it for 20 yards..
  • Demonstrate each lifeguard skill satisfactorily
  • Attend all class times with proper materials

                          * Participation in class does not guarantee successful completion of course

Students wanting a summer job at their local parks and rec, or perhaps want to work at the wellness center, need to be certified lifeguards. Here is the information about when American Red Cross classes will be held in Liberal.

 

Seward County Community College

Classes at the SCCC Wellness Center:

 

Lifeguard Training Classes:     $125*

 

May 2nd, 3rd & 4th - 5pm start time

 

Requirements:

  • Must be 15 years old
  • All classes have a minimum of 6 participants and a maximum of 10.
  • Cancellation of classes will be one week from start time.
  • Participants must attend ALL days for certification.
  • You may register by filling out a registration form in the Wellness Center.
  • Participants must purchase the lifeguard training manual from their local Red Cross Chapter (620-624-8411) or from the SCCC Bookstore (620-629-2722)
  • The first 10 participants will be allowed in class.
